WASHINGTON – Compete America, a coalition dedicated to ensuring that the United States has the highly educated and innovative workforce necessary to grow the economy and create American jobs, issued the following statement today regarding the Administration’s announcement of a ban that prevents educated professionals from entering the United States in the future, unless $100,000.00 is paid to the U.S. government.
“We stand at a crossroads for the future of American innovation. The Administration’s new Proclamation imposing a $100,000.00 payment per worker undermines the President’s goal of strengthening the United States’ leadership in cutting-edge technology and threatens to surrender the future of our country’s innovation and technology industries to our biggest global competitors,” said Scott Corley, Compete America’s Executive Director.
“America is in the midst of a global technology race that will decide the balance of economic power for the next century. If we want to ensure America’s future economic and national security, our government policies must be based on the realities of global competition. High-skilled immigration is a vital complement to the U.S. workforce. It is essential for sustaining job growth for U.S. workers and our nation’s competitive advantage across scientific disciplines. Policies that artificially inflate costs or drive away investment from our country do not protect American workers; they limit opportunities for U.S. job growth, shrink our economy, and cede the future to our competitors abroad.”
Compete America urges the Administration to reconsider this executive action. American innovation thrives when we welcome skilled talent and encourage investment in U.S. industries, not when we restrict access to qualified and talented medical professionals, scientists, and technologists, or impose heavy costs on small, medium, and large American businesses that are the drivers of economic progress.
The future of American leadership in technology and innovation is not negotiable. We call on the President to reaffirm our nation’s commitment to growth, openness, and innovation.
